Rehabilitation
The Role of Rehabilitation in Orthopaedic Care
Surgery addresses the structural problem, but rehabilitation restores function. A well-designed, consistently followed rehabilitation programme is often the single most important factor in determining a patient's long-term outcome. Our physiotherapy and rehabilitation services are integral to every treatment pathway, from the initial consultation through to full recovery.
Pre-Operative (Prehabilitation) Programmes
Research shows that patients who are physically prepared for surgery recover faster and with fewer complications. Our prehabilitation programmes, prescribed in the weeks before joint replacement or ligament reconstruction, focus on:
- Strengthening the muscles surrounding the affected joint.
- Improving cardiovascular fitness to tolerate the demands of surgery and early mobilisation.
- Educating patients about post-operative exercises, walking aids, and home modifications.
- Optimising nutrition and managing co-morbidities such as diabetes and anaemia.
Post-Operative Rehabilitation
Rehabilitation begins on the day of surgery. Our physiotherapists visit patients in the recovery room to initiate gentle range-of-motion exercises and assist with the first steps using a walker or crutches. Structured protocols—tailored to the specific procedure—guide progression through milestones such as independent walking, stair climbing, and return to driving. Continuous passive motion (CPM) machines, cryotherapy units, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation are used as adjuncts when appropriate.
Chronic-Condition Management
Not all rehabilitation is surgical. We offer long-term physiotherapy programmes for chronic conditions including osteoarthritis, chronic low-back pain, frozen shoulder, and postural syndromes. These programmes combine manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and patient education to manage symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve quality of life without the need for surgery.
Specialised Rehabilitation Services
Our rehabilitation centre provides a range of specialised services:
- Hydrotherapy — Warm-water exercises that reduce joint loading while improving mobility and strength.
- Sports-specific rehabilitation — Functional drills, plyometrics, and agility training to prepare athletes for safe return to competition.
- Occupational therapy — Assistance with adapting daily activities and workspaces to accommodate physical limitations during recovery.
- Fall-prevention programmes — Balance training and strength exercises for elderly patients at risk of fragility fractures.
Home Exercise and Tele-Rehabilitation
We recognise that not every patient can attend daily in-person sessions. Our team provides illustrated home-exercise booklets and, for patients who prefer digital access, video-guided exercise programmes that can be followed at home. Tele-rehabilitation consultations via video call allow our physiotherapists to monitor progress, adjust programmes, and answer questions remotely—ensuring continuity of care regardless of geography.
