Thorough pre-operative assessment is essential. This includes clinical examination, standing X-rays of the affected joint, and in complex cases, CT scanning for implant templating. Blood tests and cardiac assessment are performed as part of pre-operative workup.

Joint replacement is considered when osteoarthritis or other joint disease causes persistent, severe pain that significantly limits daily activities and has not responded adequately to conservative treatment (physiotherapy, medications, and injections). X-ray evidence of advanced joint space narrowing and bone-on-bone contact, combined with significant functional limitation, are the key indicators. The decision is made jointly by the patient and Dr. Singh after a thorough assessment.
In total knee replacement, all three compartments of the knee joint are resurfaced. In partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement, only the affected compartment is replaced — preserving the healthy portions of the joint. Partial replacement is suitable for patients where damage is confined to one compartment and the ligaments are intact. For the hip, partial replacement (hemiarthroplasty) replaces only the femoral head, while total hip replacement resurfaces both sides of the joint.
Total hip replacement typically takes 60 to 90 minutes. Total knee replacement takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes. Robotic-assisted procedures may take slightly longer due to the pre-operative mapping process but this is offset by greater precision in implant positioning. Most patients are mobilised and standing on the day of surgery or the morning after.
Modern joint replacements are designed to last 15 to 25 years or more in most patients. Longevity depends on implant type, surgical technique, patient weight and activity level, and bone quality. Younger and more active patients may eventually require a revision procedure. Dr. Singh uses high-quality implant systems and precise surgical technique to maximise implant longevity.
Most patients begin walking with physiotherapy support on the day of surgery or the following morning. Hospital stay is typically 2 to 4 days. Patients can usually manage stairs and return home within the first week. Driving is typically possible at 4 to 6 weeks. Return to low-impact activities such as walking, swimming, and cycling is possible within 6 to 12 weeks. Full recovery — including return to more demanding activities — typically takes 3 to 6 months.
