Knee Replacement Recovery Guide

What to expect in the first weeks and months after total knee replacement surgery — from hospital discharge to return to normal activities.

The First Week at Home

After discharge, the priority is pain management, wound care, and gentle mobilisation. Ice packs applied for 20 minutes every few hours help reduce swelling. Keep the leg elevated when resting.

Weeks 2–6: Building Strength

Physiotherapy exercises become the focus. Straight leg raises, knee bends, and walking with a frame progress to walking independently. Most patients are walking without an aid by 6 weeks.

Months 3–6: Return to Activity

By three months, most patients can return to light activities including driving (provided the non-operated leg is used for clutch/brake). By six months, low-impact sports such as cycling and swimming are generally permitted.
