ACL Reconstruction Recovery
ACL reconstruction recovery takes 9–12 months for full return to sport. Understanding each phase helps you stay on track.
Phase 1: Acute Phase (Weeks 1–2)
Focus on reducing swelling and pain, restoring range of motion, and beginning gentle quad activation exercises. Crutches are typically used for the first 1–2 weeks.
Phase 2: Strengthening (Weeks 3–12)
Progressive strengthening of the quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip muscles. Balance and proprioception training begins in this phase.
Phase 3: Sport-Specific Training (Months 4–9)
Agility drills, cutting movements, and sport-specific conditioning. Return-to-sport criteria includes strength symmetry of at least 90% and successful completion of functional tests.
