When Is Knee Replacement the Right Choice?
Knee osteoarthritis affects millions of Indians, and many patients wonder when the time is right to consider surgery. The answer is rarely simple — it depends on pain severity, functional limitation, response to conservative treatment, and personal goals.
Conservative treatment first
Before recommending surgery, we always exhaust non-surgical options: physiotherapy, weight management, activity modification, anti-inflammatory medications, and targeted injections. For many patients, these measures provide adequate relief for years.
Signs that surgery may be appropriate
Surgery becomes a serious consideration when pain significantly limits daily activities — walking, climbing stairs, or sleeping — despite optimal conservative management for at least three to six months. Imaging that shows severe joint space narrowing confirms what the clinical picture suggests.
What modern knee replacement offers
Today's implants are designed to last 20–25 years in most patients. Minimally invasive techniques mean smaller incisions, less blood loss, and faster recovery. Most patients are walking the day after surgery and home within two to three days.
