Hip Replacement Recovery: What to Expect Week by Week
One of the most common questions before hip replacement surgery is: how long will recovery take? The honest answer is that most patients are surprised by how quickly they regain function — particularly with modern minimally invasive techniques.
Week 1: Hospital and going home
You will be standing with assistance the day of surgery and walking short distances by day two. Most patients go home on day two or three. Pain is managed with oral medications — very few patients need strong opioids beyond the first few days.
Weeks 2–4: Building independence
Walking distance increases steadily. You will use a walking frame initially, transitioning to a cane around week two. Stairs become manageable by the end of the first week for most patients.
Weeks 6–12: Return to activity
The six-week mark is when most patients feel genuinely better than they did before surgery. Walking without a limp, sleeping without pain, and returning to gentle recreational activities are all realistic goals by three months.
